Women's History Month

In 1981, Congress created a Women's History week, which was later made into an entire month.  Its origin came from a weeklong celebration within a Sonoma, California school district in the late 1970’s.  In March of each year, a theme is selected, and for 2010, it's "Writing Women Back into History."  Women's History Month falls in line with International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8, which was begun in 1911.     >>Read more

Run to RCPL, the Oscars are Coming!

Do you have your ballot ready?  Well, after my recent win for most correct predictions at a friends Golden Globe party, I am starting to study the nominations that were released this month (Feb 2nd) for the Academy Awards (March 7th).  I am torn between my love of Disney Pixar's "Up" and the raw emotional prowess of "Precious: based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire."      >>Read more

Canoeing

Here in South Carolina, spring is the perfect time to get out and enjoy nature: It is warm but not too warm and the bugs and snakes are not out in full force. With the beginning of spring coming in just a couple weeks, I'm already thinking of where to go. One of the best ways to explore some natural treasures and get a good workout is canoeing our state’s many rivers and lakes. If you paddle through the Congaree Swamp National Park, you will discover it’s monstrous trees and diverse wildlife which includes: song birds, woodpeckers, deer, otters and turtles. Or you can take in the scenery and flowers of the Saluda and Congaree Rivers. If you like to fish and camp, grab your rod and camping gear and head out on a river adventure.

Midwest Living

As I was getting the Mental Floss magazine off the display for the previous blog entry, I saw Midwest Living and couldn’t resist. As a transplanted Midwesterner, I felt compelled to read this magazine and let the people of Richland County know what kind of living is going on in the Midwest – or the flyover zone as it is often called.

The cover is enticing with some cinnamon nut muffins dripping in a caramel sauce and the promise of more quick and easy breakfast breads.  A main feature of issue is comfort foods, because winter in the Midwest often requires some form of comfort.

The travel section focuses on Austin, Texas a good place to find warmth and sunshine in the winter months as well as enjoy the food, music and people.  The home and garden section has "6  Furniture Facelifts" that include appliqués, painted furniture, two-tone finish as well as a couple things I had never  heard of – nailhead glamour?  It seems Midwestern comfort food is very similar to Southern comfort food - pot roast, macaroni and cheese, chicken pot pie, and garlic mashed potatoes.

The central article is "The Best Places to Get Snowed In" - by the lake, in the city, with kids, to romance, to play and to cook.   This article covers locations in Minnesota, Michigan, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Ohio.  It has activity and hotel recommendations for each location.   Another multi-state article is called "New Spots to Eat, Play and Stay."  If you are traveling to any Midwestern state and want to try out the latest restaurant, activity or hotel consult Midwest Living first.  A family wedding this summer takes us to Traverse City, Michigan where we will check out the Slabtown Café and Burgers – all in the name of library research, of course.

Most cities and states have a motto (Columbia is Famously Hot) Midwest Living has a page of city, state and  colleges mottos in the Midwest.  For those of you who love trivia the motto of Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan is Lux Esto (Give Light) and the motto for Bushnell, South Dakota is “It’s Not the End of the Earth, But You Can See It From Here.”

This Land Is Your Land

Back in January of 2009, I had the opportunity to trek to Washington, DC for the Presidential Inauguration.  It's hard to believe an entire year has now passed. One of the most memorable moments of my experience came when the "We Are One" concert was re-played on all of the jumbo trons before the ceremony.  When the song "This Land is Your Land" was led by Bruce Springsteen and Pete Seeger, everyone joined in singing.  Singing that great American folk song with about two million of my fellow citizens was an overwhelming experience.  I wonder if Woody Guthrie would have ever imagined such a scene when he originally came up with the song in the 1940s.    >>Read more
