Graphic novels are book-length works in which the story is told in both words and pictures. The term graphic novel can apply to works that are originally produced in book format as well those that were previously published as a series or in comic book form and are later combined to form a book-length work. Though they are extremely popular with young adults, graphic novels are written for various audiences, including children, teens and adults. Graphic novels vary greatly in subject and style, encompassing a number of traditional genres from horror and fantasy to realistic fiction and memoirs.
