A Celebration of Stories
RCPL’s annual storytelling festival, cosponsored by the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science, brings to life the world of storytelling and children’s literature. The festival honors the works and achievements of nationally-known author and storyteller Augusta Baker, who moved to Columbia in 1980 and was appointed the Storyteller-in-Residence at USC.
2009 A(ugusta) Baker’s Dozen

Kimberly Willis Holt will be the featured guest for the 23rd annual A(ugusta) Baker’s Dozen—A Celebration of Stories on April 24-25 at the Main Library.
Holt’s first novel, My Louisiana Sky, was an ALA Notable Book and an ALA Top Ten Best Book for Young Adults. It also received a Boston Globe—Horn Book Honor Award. Her second novel, When Zachary Beaver Came to Town, won the 1999 National Book Award. She is also the author of Keeper of the Night.
The two-day festival features a lecture by Holt at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24, and Storytelling for Families, featuring regional and local storytellers, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. Both events, which are free and open to the public, will be held at the Main Library.
Additionally, RCPL gathers more than 2,000 fourth graders on the grounds of the historic Robert Mills House in Columbia to hear regional and local storytellers on Friday morning.
A(ugusta) Baker’s Dozen is cosponsored by RCPL and the USC School of Library and Information Science.
The 2009 event would not be possible without the support of the Friends of the Richland County Public Library, Baker and Baker Fund for Children’s Literacy, C.G. Fuller Foundation, Richland County School District One, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and the Historic Columbia Foundation.
