The Main Library in downtown Columbia is home to more than 20 pieces of art, including the Where the Wild Things Are mural in the Children’s Room -- the first and only place renowned children’s author and illustrator Maurice Sendak allowed his work to be used as public art.

Where the Wild Things Are Mural and Free-Standing Scenes, Maurice Sendak, Author/Illustrator
(located in Children's Room)

A 46-foot-mural enhances the garden area and two freestanding scenes greet the patrons as they enter the Children's Room. RCPL is the only location where Maurice Sendak has allowed his artwork to be used as public art. Michael Hagen, an internationally recognized scenic painter, produced the artwork.
