RCPL Art Exhibit Space

RICHLAND COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY EXHIBITION SPACE GUIDELINES GALLERIES

The artist is responsible for bringing in and picking up his/her own exhibit. The gallery utilizes a cable suspension system. All work must be wired. The cable system works best if the artwork is wired from the top at ¼ its height rather than in the middle. The wire should also be taut rather than loose. Under no circumstances may art work, labels, or business cards be taped, glued, or nailed to the walls. All signage and checklists will be handled by the library unless approved by the Main Library Services Librarian who will install or supervise the installation of all gallery exhibits.

Exhibits are generally booked one year or more in advance for a period of six to twelve weeks. Cancellations will be filled by contacting artists in order of application. Priority will be given to library sponsored exhibits and displays relating to literature. The artist will be required to submit a resume and six to ten nonreturnable photographs or slides of his/her work.

Exhibit approval is decided by an undisclosed library committee.

The Library will distribute publicity to area newspapers, radio, and television stations.

The Wachovia Gallery contains approximately 100 linear feet with 120 additional linear feet for larger shows. Approximately 25 medium-sized pieces are required for the main gallery area, and the extended area can show 25-35 additional pieces dependent upon size.

The First Level Gallery contains a wire display with approximately two 8.5' x 2.5' panels. Approximately 10 medium sized pieces are required for the First Level Gallery area.

EXHIBITION SPACE POLICY

Due to the number of requests from artists and craftsmen for exhibition space at the Library, and because members of the Library staff are not art critics, the following criteria have been established:

1. The artist must have held at least one previous one-person show.

2. Because the Library is a public institution and the exhibit area is frequented by groups of children, nudes or suggestive subjects cannot be shown although the Library recognizes that they are art forms.

3. The artist must submit a list containing titles and prices of art displayed at the Library; however, no prices may be shown to the public as the Library is not to be used as a selling vehicle. The artist may have cards at the exhibit for the information of prospective buyers.

4. Receptions for individual artists are not allowed.
