Richland County Public Library Foundation

Make a Great Library Better... Support the Foundation!

The Richland County Public Library touches tens of thousands of families in the Midlands and beyond. RCPL serves everyone in our community, regardless of age or background, and provides free access to quality information and resources that enhance their lives, both personally and professionally.

With library usage up more than 25 percent and continuing to rise, it is critical for the Foundation to increase private support for the library—the one public institution serving people of all ages and backgrounds. Only by leveraging its public funding with private support can RCPL continue to ensure its high quality services for future generations.

Who We Are?
RCPL is one of the most important cultural and educational resources in our region. The RCPL Foundation works to increase financial support so the library can broaden and diversify its ability to serve the citizens of Richland County.

To maintain the high level of services citizens have come to expect and demand from the library, public funding is not enough. By securing significant private support through annual giving and other efforts, the Foundation helps take the library to levels of unsurpassed excellence.

RCPL receives operational funding from property taxes, but public funding alone does not make a great public library. Private support of individuals and businesses has made RCPL a leader among libraries in the Southeast, across the United States and internationally.

Philanthropic giving has enabled RCPL to:

- Establish the Walker Local History Room at the Main Library, which includes historical material focusing on Columbia and the Midlands area.

- Establish the Columbia Academy Children’s Room and Bristow-Marchant Storytime Room at the Main Library to inspire young readers to be life-long learners.

- Establish the Cunningham-Monteith Large Print Center to ensure equal access to people with physical disabilities.

- Established the Ethel Bolden Minority Scholarship in honor and recognition of Mrs. Ethel Bolden’s years of service to the Richland County community and its libraries.
