Wireless Internet Access at RCPL

Wireless Computing Now Available

Wireless Internet access is now available at the Richland County Public Library. A WiFi signal should be available in most public areas of the library.

Hardware Requirements

  • WiFi compliant 802.11 wireless Ethernet device installed in your laptop or a laptop with built-in WiFi capability. The library utilizes 802.11g wireless access points.

Software Requirements

  • Web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  • DHCP client software set to obtain addresses automatically from a server.

Limitations and Disclaimers

  • The library’s network is not secure. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and the appropriate software up to 300 feet away.
  • Library staff cannot provide technical assistance.
  • The library cannot guarantee that you will be able to make a wireless connection or that a certain level of bandwidth will be available for use.
  • The library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security or data files resulting from connection to the library’s network.
  • Using a proxy server will block wireless access. In Internet Explorer 6, the proxy server settings can be viewed by clicking Tools > Internet Options ...> Connections tab > LAN Settings... button.
  • Internet and Windows firewalls will also block wireless access. The library recommends temporarily turning off these firewalls. Windows XP firewall settings can be viewed by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel > Windows Firewall. Be sure to turn your firewalls on after using the library’s wireless access.
