Local Stuff
- See it on the silver screen
Figure out what is playing where and when you can catch it. Don’t forget to scan the Nickelodeon’s offerings, too. You probably won’t see flicks from their lineup listed anyplace else. Colamovies is your one-stop source for updates on the local cinematic scene.
- There’s nothing to do! Oh, really?
The Columbia Museum of Art will set you back a whopping $2.00 (per person with student id). Got a date? Make sure to take twice as much green stuff to cover the $4.00 total. Better yet – go on any given Saturday. It’s free! (For those of you keeping track, that leaves you with a date tab of $0.00.)
- If you are digging the museum vibe, Columbia is also home to the South Carolina State Museum. Anyone 13-65 pays the adult admission fee of $5.00, and for those 12 and under $2.00 (parental attendance is required). Here, admission on the first Sunday of each month is $1.00. Pair the two museums and you have a fun, full weekend for a little bit of nothing.
- For the most up-to-date cultural info that spans the wider spectrum, go to Arts Daily online.
- Not enough options for your ever-changing tastes? Frequent the University of South Carolina Calendar of Events. There are a lot of concerts, sporting events, and exhibits that are free and open to the community. Watch out for exceptions, though. Football games, for one, are not without an entrance fee.
- Another calendar (and some articles) you will not want to miss can be found by visiting the Free Times site. You can also pick up the weekly publication in *gasp* print.
- Still need more input? Feeling active? Perfect. Go to the Richland County Recreation Commission’s site. Live in the Irmo/Chapin area? We’ve got you covered there, too.
- Take a stroll or jump on your bike. There are great parks in your neighborhood and around the state. Grab a tennis racket or a basketball. Pack a picnic or your favorite book.
- Surround yourself with flora and fauna. Pay a visit to the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden or the recently upgraded Congaree National Park (formerly known as the swamp). Both are good ways to get out and enjoy what our state has to offer.
- See it Live! Whether you’re into live concerts featuring today’s hottest stars, or getting your fill of events such as WWE Smackdown!, the NBA and USC Basketball, the Colonial Center has something for everyone. The site includes a calendar and information about upcoming events, as well as a blog. You can even purchase tickets online!

Be in the know
- If an extraterrestrial life form showed up on your doorstep and sincerely uttered the phrase, “Take me to your leader,” would you know where to go and for whom you should look? Better brush up on that knowledge… just in case. Head to SCgov.com for these answers and more.
- To find out just about anything related to any facet of South Carolina, you only have to hit the highway: the South Carolina Information Highway, that is. We’ll call it sciway since that’s how you’ll find it. Good thing it’s only a click away.
- If you want to narrow the scope a bit, head to Columbia’s home page directly. There’s no place like home…
